Dumping
Dumping or Land Filling is an old way of disposing off wastes. It is an easy method of disposal of dry refuse. In this process, solid wastes are dumped in a low lying area and as a result of bacterial action, refuse decreases considerably in volume and are converted gradually into humus.
Effects of Dumping :
Disposing of waste has huge environmental impacts and can cause serious problems. Some waste will eventually rot, but not all, and in the process it may smell, or generate methane gas, which is explosive and contributes to the greenhouse effect. Leachate produced as waste decomposes may cause pollution.
Landfills are sites designated for dumping rubbish, garbage, or other sorts of solid wastes. Historically, they are the most common means of disposing solid waste which is either buried or left to pile in heaps. Some landfills are well managed and designed as part of integrated waste management.
Landfills however are not the most environmentally responsible solution to waste, and there are many better alternatives. These alternatives are :-
